Air India on Thursday announced a sale and lease back tie-up with US-based Willis Lease Finance Corporation for 34 CFM engines installed on 17 of its Airbus A320 family aircraft.

The alliance will see Willis Lease purchase 34 engines and provide spare and replacement engines, helping the airline avoid costly and unexpected shop visits, the former national carrier said in a statement.

Willis Lease will have an in-country team to coordinate and manage the program and all logistics and transportation involved.

The airline’s COO Nipun Aggarwal said the deal will enable Air India to “remove the maintenance burden and completely free itself from the uncertainty of maintenance costs” with engines that are not covered by a similar program offered by the original equipment manufacturer.
