LONDON: A car driven by Princess Diana in the 1980s sold for 650,000 pounds ($764,000) at auction on Saturday, days before the 25th anniversary of her death.
Silverstone Auctions said there was “strong bidding” for the black Ford Escort RS Turbo before the sale closed. The UK buyer, who has not been named, paid a buyer’s premium of 12.5% ​​above the sale price, according to the classic car auction house.
Britain and Diana’s fans worldwide are preparing to mark a quarter of a century since her death. He died in a high-speed car accident in Paris on August 31, 1997.
Diana ran the escort from 1985 to 1988. He was photographed with it outside a boutique shop in Chelsea and a restaurant in Kensington. He prefers to drive his car with a member of his security team in the passenger seat.
The RS Turbo Series 1 was usually done in white, but he got it in black for more discretion. Ford also added features for its safety, such as a second rear-view mirror for the safety officer.
The car has just under 25,000 miles.
Last year, another Ford Escort used by Diana sold at auction for £52,000 ($61,100).
