  • Elon Musk’s mother said he sleeps in the garage when she visits him.
  • The reason is related to Elon Musk’s line of work.
  • Elon Musk has previously revealed that he lives in a “very small” house.

Mae Musk, mother of billionaire Elon Musk, has revealed that she forgoes the comfort of a proper bedroom and sleeps in the garage when visiting her son.

In an interview with The Times, 71-year-old May Musk said that despite being the richest person in the world, Elon Musk doesn’t have a great, ultra-luxurious home.

So whenever he drops by the SpaceX CEO’s pad in Boca Chica, home to the company’s Texas headquarters and Starbase launch site, he has no choice but to spend the night sleeping in the garage.

The reason behind the unusual arrangement of sleep? “You can’t have a fancy house near a rocket site,” May Musk said.

A few weeks ago, Elon Musk said during a podcast that he lives in a “very small” house worth $45,000 in Boca Chica. Before that, he claimed in 2020 that he was selling “almost all” of his physical possessions and “won’t own a house”.

Doubling down on the Tesla CEO’s statement, May said in the interview that her son has no interest in material assets.

Elon is the son of former supermodel May Haldeman and South African businessman Errol Musk, whom May divorced in 1979. After the divorce, she moved to Canada with Elon and her siblings, Kimble and Tosca.

Looking back on that time, May Musk said it was “terrifying” because the family was suffering from ongoing financial problems and she constantly feared she wouldn’t be able to feed her children.

“Times were tough,” she said, explaining how the family lived in a one-bedroom apartment and couldn’t afford to buy new clothes.
